Azerbaijan’s rich birdlife, important migration routes and diverse natural landscapes take centre stage in two episodes of Global Flyways, an international documentary series developed by BirdLife International and Content With Purpose (CWP). Filmed across 35 destinations on five continents, the series explores the journeys of migratory birds and the efforts to protect them. The Azerbaijan-focused episodes, released on 10 October, were produced in collaboration with Azerbaijan Tourism Board (ATB), showcasing the country’s birdwatching opportunities and birdwatching opportunities to international audiences.
The films feature Beshbarmag Mountain, where the Caspian Sea and surrounding mountains form a natural corridor for migratory birds travelling between northern breeding grounds and destinations further south. The journey also takes viewers to Shirvan National Park and Gizilaghaj National Park, highlighting Azerbaijan’s diverse birdlife, from raptors and shorebirds to wetland and alpine species.
ATB supported the production by coordinating filming arrangements, facilitating access to locations and local experts, and providing archival footage. The episodes feature insights from local birding professional Elvin Mammadov and renowned ornithologist Elchin Soltanov, alongside an interview with Rashad Aliyev, Deputy CEO of ATB, on Azerbaijan’s tourism development strategy and the growing importance of nature-based tourism.
BirdLife International is a global nature conservation partnership bringing together 125 organisations across 120 countries, while UK-based CWP specialises in documentary filmmaking and purpose-driven campaigns.
Through its collaboration with BirdLife International and CWP, ATB is bringing Azerbaijan’s birdlife and natural heritage to international audiences, strengthening the country’s profile as a destination for birdwatching and nature-based travel.
